THEME: "LEAVE NO TRACE" (LNT) PRINCIPLES.

OBJECTIVE: Provide the youth with awareness of LNT through outdoor discussion and practical instruction of the 7 Leave no Trace philosophies

GOAL:Youth will learn through hands on activity how to perform a "Leave No Trace" Campsite setup and tear down and use a "Leave No Trace" campfire.

ACTIVITY TIME: ONE DAY OUTING (6 hours minimum)

TEACHING RESOURCES: LNT "Educators Tool Kit". (Not essential, but highly recommended) as this kit provides the scout leader with over 100 program ideas and a wealth of information that can be taught to the youth.

MISC RESOURCES: Any program material - such as pens/paper, campfire material as your Scout Leaders determine.

LEADER PREPARATION: Leaders had to be familiar with the "Educators Tool Kit" and have selected the program material in which to show the scout youth. In no "Educators Kit" is to be used, then web research is required. A good source of information is the "Boy Scouts of America" web site which contains a wealth of up to date and accurate information on Leave No Trace principles. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/resources/LeavenoTrace.aspx

High Level Overview.
1 ) We met at our local community fire pit
2 ) Scout youth were told they were going to learn and practice Leave No Trace principles as follows:
2a) Interactive discussions on each of the 7 Leave No Trace Principles
2b) Small practical examples of each LNT Trace
2c) Perform a small Scout Challenge
3 ) Hike 2.5 Km to a different location
4 ) Setup a small campsite
5 ) Build a Leave No Trace Campfire and have it inspected
6 ) Cook lunch
7 ) Clean up campsite (fire pit and all) and be inspected for Leave No Trace principals
8 ) Hike back to starting point
9 ) Refresh what had been learned.

Patrol Challenge
Scout youth were split into patrols and challenged with two objectives.

1. Practice building a leave no trace campfire showing how to minimize the impact to the environment.
2. Outline a plan for a hike and jot down a small environmental code of conduct.

After each patrol had performed these two challenges and had their efforts checked by the Scout leaders, the group set off on a 2.5 hour hike. A key element of the hike was to locate a suitable area which allowed the youth to setup a small campfire and cook a small meal/boil water and then depart showing no trace of their camp.

YOUTH PREPARATION: The youth had to be dressed appropriately, have packed lunch and a backpack.

COST TO PARENTS: Zero - other than parents providing a packed lunch.

**NOTE**
This activity was designed to achieve one of the 6 hour/one day outing requirements at the Voyageur level. This is an activity that our Troop every two years at the start of the scout year. We do this because we want to impress upon the youth the importance LNT requirements.

Though this outing covered essential outdoor skills, our Troop does not close off any of the LNT requirements with this one activity as we want our scout youth to practice and demonstrate LNT principles on all of their outings.
