Beaver Terminology |
|
To set the scene and to grow imagination, Beavers have a special language of their own, which they use at their meetings. The listed words will help the parent understand the Beaver language.
BEAVER POSITION => This is the term given to sitting cross-legged on the floor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BEAVER SALUTE => A Beaver salute is a special sign that is used as a sign of greetings, and a sign used by leaders to get the attention of the Beavers. The salute is made by raising your favourite hand, and clenching all fingers except the index and forefinger. These two fingers are placed together and curved forwards. The curved fingers represent the two teeth of a beaver
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BEAVER SIGN => Used in various ceremonies, as a signal, and as part of the salute. The first two fingers of the right hand are bent (to signify beaver teeth) and the arm is held up with elbow bent
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BUILD THE DAM => After Riverbanks, Beavers and Scouters join hands and form a circle (a dam)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CALL TO ORDER => This is a signal. A leader (and it doesn't have to be a Scouter) raises one or two hands above their head, in the Beaver sign (salute), and stands still. Beavers are taught to immediately stop what they are doing, remain still, be quiet, and respond with the same signal
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CHOMPPING POSITION => Squat with feet flat on the floor, elbows bent and placed on the knees, first two fingers of each hand are bent in the Beaver sign. This is used during the Opening Ceremony
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DAM FORMATION => This is a circle of formation used for organizing Beavers. The Dam formation is formed after River-Banks at the start of the opening and closing ceremonies
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EAGER BEAVER => This is a Beaver who has learned their Beaver Promise, Law and Motto, and has been invested
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FEEDING THE BEAVER => Feeding the Beaver is the act of collecting dues - weekly money that children contribute for supplies or special activities. The procedure for collecting dues vary from group to group. All dues are directed towards payment for materials for Beaver activities
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HANDSHAKE => The Scouting handshake is done with the left hand rather than the right. It is a gesture of friendship and trust
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INVESTITURE => A ceremony where a Kit becomes a member of the group. The Beaver receives a group scarf (aka: neckerchief, colors, Necker), and becomes an Eager Beaver
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LODGING => Lodging is the name of the closing ceremony (at the end of each meeting)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LODGING POSITION => Sitting cross-legged on the floor
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
KEEO => A KEEO is a Cub (typically aged 9 or 10 years() who works with the Beaver colony. This youth serves as a link between the Beavers and Wolf Cub Scouting sections. The purpose of the KEEO is to strengthen the communications between Beavers and the adult leaders. The KEEO will also build friendship and excitement with Beavers and promote the swim-up to Cubs. The KEEO is a member of the leadership team
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
KIT => A Kit, in both nature and in the story "Friends Of the Forest", is a young grown beaver. In the scouting program a Kit is a Beaver who has not yet been invested, and cannot wear the neckerchief
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
POND => A pond is the term where the Beaver colony meets
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RIVER BANKS => This is the formation used to organize Beavers quietly at the start of the opening and closing ceremonies. Riverbanks are two wavy lines about one meter apart
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SCOUTS OWN => A spiritual, not necessarily religious, celebration that can be held at any time. It may include songs, readings, stories, skits, prayers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SWIMMING UP => Swimming-Up is the ceremony in which the oldest Beavers in the colony are transferred to the Scouts Cub section. A Beaver is eligible to go to Cubs when they are 7 to 8 years old. The ceremony ties into chapter 8 of the book "Friends of the Forest"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TAIL SLAP => A tail slap is the name of the opening ceremony (The official start of each meeting). It is also the action of clapping hands behind the back
