 What is a KEEO? |

A KEEO is a youth from the Cub section who works in the Beaver colony. This youth is typically a second or third year Cub (age 9 or 10), and has been jointly selected by the leader ("Akela") of the Cub Section, and the colony section lead.
The Keeo's role in the Beaver program is as follows:- Serves as a link between the Beaver section and the Cub section
- Strengthens communications between Beavers and the adult leadership team.
- Establish a fun relationship with the Beavers by spending time with each Beaver, by participating and helping them with their crafts and activities
- Pique interest in the Cub program by showing off the uniform, and telling how the Cubs earn their badges
- The elements of the Cub program (Games, playacting, Music, Storytelling, Outdoors, Crafts and Spiritual Fellowship)
- The Cub Six system
- The jungle theme within Cubs, the names and what they represent
- Promote the theme of linking White Tail Beavers into meeting activities with Cubs
The KEEO is a member of the colony adult leadership team, and will attend program planning and sharing lessons, and will take an active part in the weekly colony meetings. In the Beaver colony, a KEEO will wear a silver Neckerchief that has a KEEO crest - a symbol of the connection with the Beaver program.
In the story "Friends of the Forest", KEEO is the biggest beaver in the pond. One day he is covered in magical light which turns him into a silver colored beaver. He finds that he is able to talk in human language, and the other beavers decide that it's up to the KEEO to talk to their human friends on behalf of all beavers.
A KEEO is a valuable part of the leadership team, for a number of important reasons as listed:
- KEEO's are closer to the Beaver age group, and can sometimes see things from their point of view than an adult may
- When KEEO asks Beavers for ideas, they're more likely to speak freely. This is due to the KEEO being similar in age, and Beaver youth may see the KEEO as an older child or friend.
- The KEEO is a good link between the Beaver section and Cub section. This will help promote White tail Beavers swimming up into the older Wolf Cub section.
- A KEEO can promote the activities that the Cub program offers - these program include...
- Earning Badges
- Scout Sixer System
- Different camping activities
- The Jungle / Sixer / Cub ceremonies
Having a KEEO in the Beaver colony will also help promote the growth and responsibility potential for the youth who has the role of KEEO. This role allows the KEEO to actively participate in the leadership role with the colony leadership team, and also reinforce mentoring, caring of others and leadership.
A KEEO will normally serve with a Beaver colony for a minimum period of three to six months, starting about one month after the Beaver program has started.
When a KEEO is invited to join the Beaver colony, the Beaver youth will hold an informal ceremony, greeting, and welcoming the KEEO into their midst. This ceremony will involve reading the KEEO chapter from the "Friends of the Forest" and singing the 'KEEO' song.
The KEEO will also be presented with a special Neckerchief and 'KEEO' book which explains what a KEEO does at a Beaver colony.
