Beaver Investiture |
|
When a child joins Beavers, he/she is a Kit, the term used to describe a young beaver. Kits are placed in a lodge as soon as they attend a Beaver meeting, and they may wear the Beaver hat and vest, but not the neckerchief.
To become an Eager Beaver, a Kit must know the Beaver Promise, Law, and Salute, and the opening, closing and investiture ceremonies.
Investiture is the term given to the ceremony in which the Beaver receives their uniform 'Neckerchief' and becomes an 'Eager Beaver' member of the Colony. At the end of the Investiture ceremony, the Beaver is no longer considered a 'Kit'.
To be invested, the beaver must perform the following:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Perform the Beaver salute:
Raise their favorite hand, and curve their 2nd and 3rd fingers forwards. The two curved fingers represent the front two teeth of a Beaver.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With their salute, the Beaver must then state the following
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beaver Law:
"A Beaver has fun, works hard and helps family and friends"
Beaver Promise:
"I promise to love God, and to help take care of the world"
Beaver Motto:
"Sharing, Sharing, Sharing"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Beaver leader shall help the child recite the Beaver Promise, Law and Motto if the child is anxious or nervous.
On completion of the Beaver Promise, Law and Motto, the Beaver leader shall place the Beaver 'neckerchief' around the neck of the Kit, wrapping each end of the 'Necker' over the other, to form the shape of Beaver whiskers. The 'neckerchief' shall then be clipped in place with a blue 'Beaver Woggle'.
The Beaver leader shall then use the 'Scouting' left handshake and announce a warm welcome to the Colony. At this point, the invested child may be referenced as an "Eager Beaver" and is no longer deemed a Lit.
From this point on, the child is permitted to wear the Beaver 'neckerchief' and Woggle as part of their Beaver uniform.
PARENT PARTICIPATION
The 'Investiture' ceremony is an important part of the Beaver program, as it is an official scouting ceremony which formally recognizes the attachment of Beaver children into the Beaver Colony.
As this may possibly be the first activity in which children experience such a ceremony, they may be nervous or anxious. Recognizing this, the Beaver leadership team welcomes parents involvement with the investiture ceremony. Parents/Guardians are invited to participate in the investiture ceremony. They are asked to stand behind their child when the Beavers receive their neckerchief. This is an important event in the life of a Beaver--it’s even more special if the Beaver’s parents/guardians are present and included in the ceremony. If, for some reason, a parent/guardian or other member of the family is unable to attend, a leader will act as a fill-in.
