ONE DAY ACTIVITY: BIKE, HIKE, TRAILCRAFT |

THEME: "BIKE HIKE AND TRAILCRAFT"
OBJECTIVE: Cycle to / from a local wildlife area. While in the wildlife area, hike on trails, cook lunch and visit wildlife habitats and identify trees/shrubs/wildlife
We cycled from Stittsville to Kanata (15Km), hiked 6Km on wildlife trails and then biked (15Km) back to Stittsville
GOAL: The goal of this outing was to take the scout youth through an evironmentally sensitive area and identify habitats and practice the principles of leave no trave in sensitive wildlife areas.
TEACHING RESOURCES: backpack stoves, pots. Trail maps and GPS units. Animal / plant / bird identification sheets. Leave no trace checklist. Field Guides for wildlife and tree/shrub identification
MISC RESOURCES: Small day packs, pens/papers for documenting wildlife and trees/shrubs, spare bike pump, bicycle repair kits
LEADER PREPARATION: Leaders must have outdoor skills experience in stoves, cooking, Leave No Trace and must be versed in tree/wildlife habitat identification.
High Level Overview.
1. Leaders and scouts gather at start point
2. Bike and helmet safety inspection
3. Break into patrols, distribute equipment evenly between youth in the patrols
4. Depart and bike 15Km from gathering point (Stittsville) to Kanata
5. In Kanata - before departing on trails. Scouts speak to the Troop Environmental Code of Conduct and LNT principles.
6. Hike 4 Km into trails and perform habitat / wildlife / trees/shrub identification.
7. Break for lunch - Setup a sheet of plastic for shelter for protection against wind
8. Break for lunch - Cook lunch behind shelter on backpack stoves and practice Leave no trace principles.
9. Hike 4km out of trails on different route and perform Habitat / wildlife / trees/shrub identification.
10. Bike from Kanata back to Stittsville.
COST TO PARENTS: Packed lunch
YOUTH PREPARATION: The youth had to be dressed appropriately. Ditty bag, survival kit
**SPECIAL NOTE**
16 youth started this activity. Of the 16, 5 were first year scouts.
This event took 8 hours to complete and 4 of the 1st year scouts dropped out after they had completed 6 hours - thus gaining credit for this activity towards their Chief Scout requirements.
We used this activity to touch on many of the Chief Scout Voyageur and Pathfinder Outdoor requirements.
