THEME: "HIGH ROPES and SURVIVAL PROGRAM"

We performed this activity at Scouts Canada Camp Opemikon http://opemikon.org as it had both High Ropes, Low Ropes and open campfire areas in the woods where we could practice our survival scenarios. Any locaiton which has High Rope resources will suffice, however an outdoor setting such as a scout camp is best.

OBJECTIVE: Two part program.
Part #1: High Ropes (3 hours): The objective of this High Ropes is to provide youth with an opportunity to experience rope climbing, overcome fear and build confidence.
Part #2: Survival Program (3 hours). The objective of this program is for youth to prioritize activities in a survival situation and for older youth to provide leadership opportunities to younger youth.

GOAL:
High Ropes: New experience and build confidence.
Survival Program. Prioritize activities for an unplanned overnight stay in the woods. Leadership opportunities.

TEACHING RESOURCES: Trained Instructor for High Ropes. Gear for survival activities (see program for survival program). Permit guidelines for providing instruction to the youth.

MISC RESOURCES: First Aid kits, items for campfires, food for lunch

LEADER PREPARATION: Book Leaders who are doing High Rope training must have certification in High Ropes. Leaders who are teaching survival program must have Outdoor skills experience.

    2. Divide youth into two groups.
    3. Group #1 --> High Ropes for 3 hours.

    5. Group #2 build campfire at 11:30AM and cook lunch for everyone
    6. 1:00PM - groups rotate (Group #2 goes to High Ropes and Group #1 does survival program).

COST TO PARENTS:
    1. $15 each for cost of high Ropes instructor for two 3 hour sessions.

SURVIVAL PROGRAM
Program scenario
Scout youth Patrol are on a 6 hour orienteering activity and have gotten lost in the woods at their Fall camp. It is 4PM in the afternoon and it gets dark by 7:00PM. The weather is cool and will be chilly once the sun goes down and there is a high probability of rain. The youth have decided to stop and prepare for an unplanned overnight camp before darkness falls. There is a small freshwater lake 200 meters away.

Each scout carries a daypack and when their gear is pooled, the following equipment is found.
Per person: 1 x pocket knife survival kit, personal clothes, 1 x tin of soup, ditty bag, 1 x flashlight, 1 x water bottle
Patrol equipment: 1 x first aid kit, small back pack stove, fuel, small folding saw, hatchet, 50ft rope in one continuous length. 2 x plastic tarpaulin sheets size 8ft x 10ft and 2 x flint/steel strikers, 1 x portable water filter.
Items missing: Youth discover they have no matches.

LEADER DIRECTION FOR SURVIVAL PROGRAM
Leaders provide 15 minute overview discussing safe use of backpack stove, hatchets and directing the youth to spend 5 minutes to prioritize on the order of activities in order to provide shelter, heat, food and warmth for an overnight stay.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES and LEADER GUIDANCE
Youth are to self direct themselves in this survival scenario. Leaders will step in and guide the youth when there is a need to be safe. However, 3rd year scouts are advised they should be providing leadership to other youth for motivation, attitude and teaching skills to younger youth.

ACTIVITIES THAT MUST BE COVERED
    1. Build a campfire by cutting wood with a saw and hatchet
    2. Campfire must be started without matches.
    3. Cooking and sharing food
    4. Cooking can be done by camp fire or by backpack stove
    5. Water filtration
    6. Building one or more shelters for overnight stay and for protection against rain and wind

Scout leaders will be allowed to critique each activity and make recommendations on the activities as they are being conducted by the youth. If a leader has to step in and demonstrate a skill for safety. The entire patrol must watch. The leader will take no more than 10-15 minutes to provide a refresher on the skills that need to be learned.

FEEDBACK
At the end of the 2.5 hour survival program, the leaders will walk the youth through all of the scenarios that were performed and comment on their activities, attitude, motivation, leadership and team building.
