Our team of volunteer Scouters is preparing to resume in person Scouting activities within the 1st Stittsville Scout Group. We are reaching out to you to provide an update of our preparations and provide preliminary information on our plans to resume in person activities and request confirmation if your youth will continue with Scouting this Fall.
Confirmation of Your Plans for Fall
Scouts Canada has extended all memberships to December 31, 2020 at no charge, so there is no charge for your youth to continue Scouting this Fall. In order to assist with planning we need you to confirm whether your youth will continue with Scouting or not this Fall by August 31. If you have not already submitted your response, please login to your MyScouts account and click the “Sign Up Register” link in the left hand menu. You will then be presented with 3 options for each of your youth:
Continue with Scouting this Fall
Hold your spot for early registration for the new Scouting year to start in January, 2021
Not return to Scouting
We would appreciate a response for all youth, including those not returning.
We will be restricted to 16 youth maximum at in person activities, so it is very important we know if your youth will continue with Scouting this Fall.
We recognize that 3rd year Beaver and Cub youth and 4th year Scout youth were scheduled to move up to their new sections in April and are likely looking forward to advancing to their new sections. Therefore, these youth will have the option of advancing to their new section this Fall. Please follow the MyScouts process above to confirm these youth will continue with Scouting this Fall and then inform your section Contact Scouter of the desire for the youth to advance. We will manually transfer these youth to their new section in MyScouts and parents will be added to the new section’s e-mail list.
Scouts Canada COVID Information
Like most organizations, Scouts Canada is taking a phased approach to the resumption of normal activities. We have been in Phase 1 (virtual activities only) since mid-March and will be entering Phase 2 on September 1. Phase 2 will allow in person Scouting activities to resume with a number of restrictions and precautions, including meetings being held outdoors only, a maximum attendance of 16 youth, physical distancing, limited or no sharing of materials, and sanitization requirements.
You can read more about Scouts Canada’s phased approach in the Step By Step Return to Scouting document.
At the local level, Scouting is entirely volunteer run, including myself as Group Commissioner and the teams of Scouters we have in each section. Like any year, we have seen a number of our volunteers depart due to a variety of personal circumstances such as work, family, and health reasons, as well as Scouters advance to a new section with their advancing youth. Unlike other years, we were not able to recruit new volunteers during the Spring period to fill the gaps ahead of September. This has left us short volunteers in several of our sections. Unfortunately, without additional volunteers we are at risk of some sections either not being able to operate this Fall or only being able to operate on an infrequent basis with limited programming.
If you are willing to volunteer, please contact the Group Commissioner at commissioner@
Resumption of In Person Scouting in 1st Stittsville
Now that firm information is available from Scouts Canada, our teams of volunteer Scouters are working to plan for a resumption of in person section meetings sometime in September. For those who complete the MyScouts process to confirm your youth’s continuation of Scouting this Fall, you will be informed by the Section Contact Scouter of the details for the resumption of section meetings. Please keep in mind that meetings are being held outdoors, so will not be at the usual school locations.
I also ask for your patience and support as we resume in person activities. We have a dedicated team of volunteer Scouters who will be doing our best to offer a safe and fun program for all the youth while also respecting a number of new processes and procedures.
Yours In Scouting,
Scouter Terry Smart
